2023-24 Class Disclosure Letter
7th Grade English Language Arts Mr. Maughan
Dear students and parents: I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a little about my class. We are going to be together for the entire school year. Here is some information that will help make those 180 days as successful as possible. I keep up to date in CANVAS, so you can follow what we have done in class every day and if anything was assigned or handed in. You can also email anytime or call me after 3:35.
Materials needed every day -a personal reading book (a definite must) -binder/folder -lined paper -pen or pencil
Class Rules 1. Pay attention. 2. Follow instructions.
Grades and Citizenship I will be teaching your child for one class period a day. During those fifty-one minutes he or she will be taught the differing aspects of the language arts such as: reading comprehension, punctuation and grammar, building vocabulary, demonstrating independent reading, improving our writing, listening skills, etc. Grades will be determined by a student’s ability to meet the required proficiency level on individual standards from the state curriculum.
Student grades are located in ASPIRE and updated at least once a week. These grades and my CANVAS page, which gives a summary of each day’s events and assigned work, can be found on the MLMS webpage. With these tools, along with reaching me by phone and email, you and your child can ALWAYS know how he/she is progressing in my class.
Students will also receive a citizenship grade. Students can earn an “H” for Honors by excelling in attendance, behavior, participation, and work ethic. Any student not earning an Honors score will be notified how they can improve for the next quarter.
Testing Students can expect to be tested occasionally for various skills so that appropriate school services can be offered. If necessary, general testing will be followed up with individual reading assessments to determine those services.
Final Thoughts I appreciate your concern for your child’s education. We work hard in this class and students learn quickly that they are responsible for their success. I look forward to working with you and your child to help insure a positive and worthwhile experience. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please contact me. Thank you.
